Architecture Sans Frontières Seminar

7th June

Piercy&Company took part in the Challenging Practices Seminar hosted by ASF-UK in London. Over the course of two days, participants took part in a series of real life scenarios; role playing activities which focused on encouraging a participatory approach to design.

The first case study was based in Mashimoni, Kenya, which was based on ASF's 'Change by Design' programme. Key contextual issues were explored in order to develop a portfolio of options for the community to consider when beginning a slum upgrading programme. The seminar focused on institutional, community and dwelling research to combine common, and sometimes conflicting interests, in order to achieve dignified housing and equitable development.

The second day saw the team investigate disaster risk reduction, in the context of L'Aquila, Italy, which suffered an earthquake in 2009. Participants looked at the timeline of events in the case of a 'disaster' and the various stakeholders and key players in the rehabilitation process, and what role built environment professionals are placed within it. This case study was based on ASF's 'Resillience by Design' programme which has been in practice since 2006.

Piercy&Company was represented by Simhika Rao.
