National Gallery Extension Shortlist
We are delighted to announce that a design team led by Piercy&Company and Farshid Moussavi Architecture has been shortlisted for Project Domani, a design competition for the £375 million extension to the National Gallery in London.
The competition is to design a new 5,500-7,000m² wing for the gallery. It will be the final stage of a redevelopment masterplan launched by the gallery in 2018 and the largest project in the gallery’s 200-year history.
The competition jury is being led by National Gallery board of trustees chair John Booth, who said: “The National Gallery’s renowned collection of great paintings and our ambition to develop this further for the benefit of a larger, more diverse public demands a space that not only preserves and displays the collection, but also elevates the visitor experience, enhancing the gallery’s reputation as one of the most visited and stimulating museums in the world.
We look forward to finding the right architectural partner to join us on this once-in-a-lifetime journey to create a landmark of local and international significance: creatively ambitious, technologically innovative and environmentally sensitive.”
The international shortlist includes:
- Foster + Partners
- Kengo Kuma & Associates, BDP & MICA Architects
- Renzo Piano Building Workshop, William Matthews Architects & Adamson Associates
- Selldorf Architects & Purcell
- Studio Seilern Architects, Donald Insall Associates & Ralph Appelbaum Associates
The winning team will be announced in April 2026, with the project planned to complete in 2030.
